Mazingira Day Celebrations Tree Planting Exercise
University of Embu Joins National Tree-Growing Initiative in Kakamega County
The University of Embu, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, EBS, joined the Principal Secretary, State Department for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, CBS, and other stakeholders in a national tree-growing exercise at Senyende Forest in Kakamega County.
As part of the initiative, the team later distributed more than 3,000 tree seedlings to residents of Ikonyero during an event held at Ikonyero Secondary School, reinforcing the importance of community participation in environmental conservation and restoration.
The exercise brought together universities, government agencies, environmental organisations, private-sector partners and local communities, united by a shared commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices, restoring degraded ecosystems and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
The initiative aligns with the Government of Kenya’s ambitious 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, which seeks to increase the country’s tree cover to 30 per cent by 2032. The programme aims to restore degraded landscapes, conserve biodiversity, mitigate the effects of climate change and strengthen the country’s resilience to environmental challenges.
Through its participation, the University of Embu reaffirms its commitment to environmental sustainability, community engagement and collaborative efforts towards achieving a greener and more sustainable future.
Every tree counts. Every action matters. Together, let us grow a greener, healthier and more resilient Kenya
