Courtesy Visit by Professors from South Africa Research Chairs Intiative

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, on Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, hosted a delegation of three distinguished Professors under the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) who paid him a courtesy call at his office. The delegation was received in the company of the UoEm Coordinator, Centre for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Dr. Justin Nyaga, and Dr. Hezron Isaboke.

The delegation was led by the SARChI Chairholder, Prof. Amon Taruvinga, and included Prof. Abbyssinia Mushunje and Prof. Nobert Jere, all from the University of Fort Hare (UFH), South Africa.

The visiting scholars arrived at the University on Monday, 20th July 2026, for a week-long academic and research engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two institutions. During their visit, the team will undertake the SARChI Chair induction programme, participate in the selection and field verification of study sites for the joint SARChI Chair research project in Kenya, and conduct site visits to two operational recycling initiatives—the waste paper recycling project and the e-waste recycling project—as part of efforts to advance research on sustainable environmental management and the circular economy.

The University of Embu is a member of the consortium that successfully applied for the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI)/National Research Foundation (NRF) Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI), with Prof. Amon Taruvinga of the University of Fort Hare serving as the Chairholder. The collaboration underscores the University’s commitment to fostering international research partnerships, promoting innovation, and developing sustainable solutions to climate change and environmental challenges through joint research and knowledge exchange.
