UoEm VC, Prof. Daniel Mugendi recognized as top researcher

University of Embu (UoEm) has emerged position six (6) out of 51 universities in Kenya that have been ranked in the latest Alper-Doger Scientific Index, also known as “AD Scientific Index ranking”. The “AD Scientific Index”, unlike other systems is based on the scientific performance and productivity of individual scientists. The AD Scientific Index 2022 has recognized Prof. Daniel Mugendi, the Vice-Chancellor of UoEm and Dr. Josephine Ngunjiri a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences among the top researchers in Kenya.

Prof Mugendi was ranked position 12 in Kenya, 628 in Africa and 90235 in the world. Dr. Ngunjiri was ranked position 50 in Kenya, 1533 in Africa and 157663 in the world.  Prof Mugendi was recognized for his contribution to Agriculture and Forestry while Dr. Ngunjiri was recognized for her contribution to Medical and Health Sciences especially Parasitology. Professor Mugendi, who also is a lecturer in the Department of Water and Agricultural Resource Management has authored many book chapters and published many scholarly articles in high impact journals. He continues to teach, supervise postgraduate students and conduct research in Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management. Dr. Ngunjiri has a PhD Degree in Tropical and Infectious Diseases and her research on the global burden of disease and neglected parasitic diseases has been published in top journals in the world including the Lancet.

In his address to Senate on 28th January 2022, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the ranking was a true reflection of the contribution of UoEm to research at the national and international level.  He observed that the University has invested heavily in training and capacity building to strengthen the research output of academic staff. He further noted that UoEm had overtaken many other older and established universities including Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology which was ranked position 7, South Eastern Kenya University position 9, Pwani University Position 11 and Egerton University position 12.
