UoEm sign MoU with Nanjing University, China

The University of Embu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nanjing University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning on Thursday, 7th August, 2025. The signing ceremony took place at the State Department for Higher Education Offices at Jogoo House, Nairobi and was hosted by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Higher Education Dr. Beatrice Inyangala represented by the Deputy Secretary, Dr. Carol Hunja. The University of Embu was represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, who signed the MoU with the Chairperson of the Nanjing University Council, Prof. Tieniu Tan, a leading AI researcher and senior member of China’s ruling Communist Party (CPC) and Senior Members of the University of Embu management and Faculty of Nanjing University.

Speaking during the Ceremony, the VC, Prof. Daniel Mugendi, welcomed the partnership and expressed the University’s interest in collaborating in key areas including Artificial Intelligence, Postgraduate Training, Research Exchange, Rural Development, and Climate Change. He noted that the collaboration would also enhance academic mobility, joint proposal development, and staff development between the two institutions. “At the University of Embu, we believe that strategic partnerships are the bridge to solving global challenges.” Prof. Mugendi stated, highlighting the University’s rapid growth and reputation for excellence in performance. He added that the institution is committed to expanding its international partnerships to deliver impactful research and innovative solutions, especially in response to pressing issues such as food insecurity and environmental stress. “Together, we can transform ideas into solutions that uplift communities and safeguard our planet for future generations,” he affirmed.

Prof. Tieniu Tan, on his part, commended the University of Embu for its dedication to international collaboration, noting that such partnerships are essential for fostering innovation, enhancing academic excellence, and addressing shared global challenges. He noted that the Nanjing University delegation comprised leading faculty and researchers driving innovation in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, software engineering, governance, African studies, geology, and emergency management. “Such partnerships are essential for fostering innovation, enhancing academic excellence, and addressing shared global challenges,” said Prof. Tieniu Tan.

In particular, Prof. Tan highlighted the role of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence in addressing global challenges, noting the importance of collaborative research in driving innovation and problem-solving. He further underscored the strategic value of African studies and governance research in enhancing mutual understanding and fostering culturally relevant solutions to contemporary issues.
