Farmers Training

On Thursday, 29th January 2026, The University organized a coffee farmers’ training which brought together farmers from Murue Coffee Farmers, Kagaari North Coffee Farmers, and Gakundu Cooperative Society in Embu County. The training was conducted at the University Auditorium and the School of Agriculture demonstration plots providing an interactive learning environment that strengthened farmers’ technical understanding while enhancing their capacity to apply improved practices on their farms.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Josiah Gitari, Chairman of the Department of Water and Agricultural Resource Management, representing the Vice-Chancellor, welcomed participants and commended their dedication to cooperative development, noting that such commitment is key to improving productivity. He also thanked the trainers for their expertise and willingness to empower the community.
The University adopted an integrated approach by combining legal literacy with practical agricultural training. Dr. Wilson Ngigi, Chairman of the Department of Commercial Law, delivered a session on land law, land succession, and alternative dispute resolution, underscoring the importance of secure land tenure in agricultural productivity. Practical sessions were led by Mr. Jeremy Ireri, who covered coffee management practices such as spacing, mulching, pest control, pruning and coffee grafting. Farmer were also guided on the preparation and use of quality farmyard manure to enhance soil fertility and yields.
The training underscored the University of Embu’s pivotal role as a centre of training, research, innovation, and community empowerment through extension services. By translating academic expertise into practical solutions, the University continues to strengthen farmer capacity, support sustainable agriculture, and foster lasting partnerships that contribute to a resilient and productive coffee sector in the region.
